Slashdot effect

Slashdot is so lame these days. First of all, Linux is like 90% communists. That's why it's called RedHat. Most of the posts there seem to be so lame and so 'lets attack this or that' rather than attempt to be informative or useful.
CyberMonk's post about the so called 'slashdot' effect nails the inherent dilemma head on -- you want to be uber popular, and getting linked by Slashdot will get that for you, but you don't want your month of server bandwidth to be used in an hour. Cyber's post was spawned by this question of JWizard's, which asks if preventing the slashdot effect through a very fast server swap would be a viable business model. The next step, of course, is for Slashdot to blackmail people into "opting in" to this service.
In any case, I think I'll take Erik's advice and shutdown my web server. Maybe instead I'd replace the page in question with "Page temporarily removed. Please ask next time Slashdot, and come again!", or something similar.

In any case, nothing I write is that important, so it won't ever happen.
